Using Podcasts, Audiobooks and Internet Calls on a Data-Only eSIM

A data-only global eSIM can carry streaming podcasts, streaming audiobooks, and internet calls while the home number stays on the phone for regular calls and texts. On iPhone, the data line can be chosen separately from the voice line, and Apple's Dual SIM guidance says iPhone 13 models and later also support two eSIMs.
What a data-only eSIM is for
uPhone says its global eSIM is a single digital SIM profile that works across 150+ countries worldwide, and that uPhone eSIM plans are data-only. It also says the physical SIM stays in the phone, so the home number can still receive calls and texts while the eSIM supplies data.
That matters for listening behavior. If the audio app is streaming, the phone is using the eSIM’s data connection. If the audio is already downloaded, it plays from local storage and does not need a live data connection for playback.
Streaming podcasts and audiobooks
Streaming audio is the straightforward case. Podcasts, audiobooks, and live internet radio all use data while they play, so they fit a data-only eSIM plan. uPhone says its data-only plans can be used for calls and texts through apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, iMessage, or Signal over the data connection.
- Streaming podcast episodes uses mobile data while playback continues.
- Streaming audiobooks uses mobile data while playback continues.
- Downloading episodes or chapters uses mobile data only during the download.
uPhone also describes its plans as suitable for calling apps such as WhatsApp and FaceTime over the data connection, which is the same connectivity path used by streaming audio apps.
Downloaded audio is different
Downloaded audio is the cleanest way to reduce data use. Once a podcast episode or audiobook chapter has been saved to the device, playback comes from the phone’s storage instead of from the network.
Neither Apple nor uPhone gives a special media setting for offline playback in the pages provided. The documentation does not list app-specific streaming controls, buffer limits, or audio quality choices.
Internet calls use data, but the home number can remain active
Apple’s Dual SIM guidance says Dual SIM enables two active phone numbers or SIMs to make and receive calls and text messages, and it explains that you can choose which number uses cellular data. That lets one line provide data while the other stays available as the voice line.
Apple’s guidance also says to change which number uses cellular data, open Settings, tap Cellular or Mobile Data, tap Cellular Data, then tap the number you want to use cellular data. The same page says iPhone 13 models and later support Dual SIM with two eSIMs, in addition to a physical SIM and an eSIM.
- The home number can stay present for regular calls and texts.
- Internet calls such as FaceTime, WhatsApp calls, and Signal calls use data rather than the voice line.
- Apple’s Dual SIM guidance lets the user separate the data line from the voice line on supported iPhone models.
How iPhone routes cellular data
Apple's cellular-data guidance says to go to Settings, tap Cellular, then turn Cellular Data on or off. It also says to tap Cellular Data Options for roaming and other cellular settings.
The same documentation says Data Roaming permits internet access over a cellular data network when the phone is in a region not covered by the carrier’s network. It also says that to stay connected while traveling, users can contact their carrier about international plans or add a travel eSIM.
- Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data turns data on or off.
- Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options contains roaming and related options.
- Settings > Cellular > Data Mode can be used to choose Low Data Mode.
Supported iPhone setups and label handling
Apple says Dual SIM can be used with a physical SIM and an eSIM, and that iPhone 13 models and later also support Dual SIM with two eSIMs. Apple’s Dual SIM guidance lists supported combinations by model family, including one physical SIM and one eSIM on iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and later, and two eSIMs on iPhone SE (3rd generation), iPhone 13, and later.
Apple also says you can change a line’s label in Settings by tapping Cellular or Mobile Data, selecting the number, then tapping Cellular Plan Label and choosing or entering a label. That can help separate a home line from a travel data line in the phone’s settings.
Practical listening setup
For AudioLover readers, the simplest setup is a home voice line plus a data-only global eSIM for travel data. Streaming podcasts, streaming audiobooks, and internet calls all then run through the data line, while the home number remains available for regular calls and texts.
If the listening app supports downloads, saving episodes or books before leaving Wi-Fi reduces the amount of data the eSIM has to carry. Apple’s pages do not document any special podcast or audiobook controls, so the documented controls are the cellular-line choices, roaming settings, and data-line selection.
